VP Boyle is a director, writer, filmmaker, creative producer and Broadway audition coach whose career has moved between rehearsal rooms, classrooms, film sets, cruise ships and the development of new work for the stage.

For more than 25 years, Boyle has worked with professional performers and emerging artists while developing a particular expertise in contemporary musical theatre, pop/rock performance and the constantly evolving demands of the Broadway audition room. His work has always lived somewhere at the intersection of actor, music and story — whether he is coaching a performer, directing a production, developing a new musical or building an entertainment concept from the ground up.

Most recently, Boyle co-created THE TWISTED CHRISTMAS SHOW with Pamela Bob and Mark Fifer for a holiday run at The Green Room 42 in New York City.

He is also developing a slate of original work for theatre, film and live entertainment.

FINDING BEDFORD FALLS is an ensemble feature screenplay set in a Vermont community theatre during the holidays, where an attempt to stage a beloved Christmas story collides with the realities of the world outside the theatre.

STRING LIGHTS is a stylized ensemble feature drama about the complicated ways people survive loss, disappointment and one another.

OSCURO: EVERYONE WEARS A MASK is an immersive, choose-your-own-ending musical experience set inside a dystopian cantina on Día de Muertos.

DESERT DREAM reimagines Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a rock musical set at Burning Man and driven by the alternative music of the ’90s.

His development work has also included new musical projects featuring the music of Fall Out Boy and Lady Gaga, along with an expanding slate of original concepts for cruise ship brands, casino venues and other forms of location-based live entertainment.

For Carnival Entertainment, Boyle created and directed DEAR FUTURE HUSBAND, an interactive pop musical for the company’s Playlist Productions. What begins as a wedding adventure aboard a cruise ship — a bride, a groom and their best friends attempting to make it to happily-ever-after — spills out of the theatre and into an actual wedding reception with the audience.

The production is built around pop hits including Bruno Mars’ “Marry You,” Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” and Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” After the final number, guests continue the story alongside the cast with a first dance, surprises from the wedding party, a toast to the newlyweds, dancing and, naturally, a garter toss. The production has expanded across the Carnival fleet, and Boyle continues to develop original entertainment for the company, including new work for Excel-class ships launching in 2027 and 2028.

Boyle is the author of AUDITION FREEDOM: THE IRREVERENT WELLNESS GUIDE FOR THEATRE PEOPLE, a decidedly unconventional approach to the psychology, craft and occasional insanity of being a working theatre artist. He has been a guest contributor to BroadwayWorld.com and was featured as a Broadway expert in Southern Theatre magazine.

His directing work includes the West Coast production of ROAR: SHE’S A HERO. SHE JUST DOESN’T KNOW IT YET. As a filmmaker, Boyle wrote and directed the Academy Award-qualifying musical short IT IS WHAT IT IS as well as the award-winning musical shorts LIFELESS and GINGERBREAD HOUSE.

At the USC School of Dramatic Arts, Boyle served as Creative Director of LiveRead@SDA, an initiative supporting the development of innovative contemporary musical theatre. The program brought writers, composers, performers and other artists together around new work while it was still being discovered — not after all the interesting questions had already been answered.

Education has also been a significant part of Boyle’s career. He created curriculum for accredited musical theatre programs at the University of Southern California, New York Film Academy and Relativity School, an accredited film and performing arts institution originally created in partnership with a major motion picture studio.

Boyle was also selected as Lead Consultant to help create and design USC’s collaborative BFA in Contemporary Musical Theatre, bringing together the USC School of Dramatic Arts, Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and Thornton School of Music. He additionally served as Creative Director for the opening performance of the USC Village Gala, the largest award-winning event ever produced by USC’s Office of Cultural Relations and University Events.

Boyle grew up in the cornfields of Illinois before building a career in New York City, with time spent in Los Angeles adding perspective. The combination has proven useful — a Midwest work ethic, a New York inability to tolerate unnecessary bullshit and an LA appetite for reinvention.

Across the board, the work remains fundamentally the same: find the human story, get talented people into a room, figure out how to make the thing work in front of an actual audience and celebrate joy along the way.
